Change of Name - is it true?
I hope it's an unsubstantiated rumour, but I've heard that the CHA Board has changed the name of the Association to the Christ's Hospital Old Blues' Association (CHOBA). I don't remember any consultation about this, and wonder how present and potential non-Old Blue members would feel about it, if it were true.
Also, I thought it was the Council of Almoners who decided to name the CHA the 'Christ's Hospital Association', so wonder if the CHA Board actually has the power to change the name of the Association unilaterally.
If it is true, I wonder what the rationale is?
Anyone have any information or views?

Unfortunately, it is correct. What I find so insulting is that there was not even a pretence of seeking to consult members of the association as to what they thought of the proposal. After all, what is the rush? What is the rationale - if any? It is well accepted in modern management that an organisation short of money and struggling to stay alive takes three steps: builds a bigger HQ, changes its name, and spends ever greater time in writing 'mission statements' which are never fulfilled because the staff are spending even more time on writing yet further statements! Remember "Consignia"? In this case, the CHA Board, which is self-selecting (to ensure compliance of its members), has totally failed to consult anyone outside its own very restricted circuit.
I would also support Kerren in drawing attention to those people, not Old Blues, who nevertheless love the school and all it stands for? About 20 years ago the then Old Blues Club changed its name to the CH Club, precisely in order to include such people. I persoally know three who were members of the CH Club on this basis. They will certainly feel excluded by the change of title (and two out of the three currently intend to make major bequests to C.H., but this could change).
What would be wrong in publishing the proposal in the CHA newsletter, together with the rationale, and inviting members to write in with their comments? It would add a few weeks - but so what - and if opinion was against the change - well, that's democracy for you! I challenge the Board to consult its members.

Re: Change of Name - is it true?
Come to think of it, DBTS mentioned on another thread on Friday that he was off to attend a CHOBA meeting.
As with all such matters, it might have been preferable to have given some notice to the Old Blue community before making any changes, even if only to to reduce the number of dark mutterings and conspiracy theories which will inevitably result.
I'm sure all will be revealed in due course, so perhaps we should reserve judgement for the moment.

We await the moment, Richard. Until then, it may not even be true!

Re: Change of Name - is it true?
So the MEMBERS of the CHA actually had NO say in the name change.
Was this mandated when the Board was voted for?

Re: Change of Name - is it true?
Not quite sure where you got this from, since according to the book "The Christ's Hospital Club, the first hundred years" page 9, the vote was 80 in favour of the name "Christ's Hospital Club" and 13 in favour of "The Old Blues Club" taken at the meeting on the 17th February 1891.Foureyes wrote:About 20 years ago the then Old Blues Club changed its name to the CH Club, precisely in order to include such people. According to that it has always been the CH Club.
However, if they had combined the names then, this thread would not exist.

Re: Change of Name - is it true?
I fail to see the need for a name change in the first place. What's the gain ?
Still - I suppose C.H.O.B.A. is better than calling it...........
Christs Hospital Unified Brotherly Board (of) Yesteryear.............
or........................
C.H.U.B.B.Y.
(awaits loud explosion from the Hertford Brigade !!!!)
