Re: St Matthew’s Day
I must look through my files, but I seem to remember a photo of my predecessor as OB editor, Paddy Drake, leading the St Matthews Day parade over a bridge, as drum major.

Re: Bernard Levin
I have a feeling he died on my watch as O B editor, and the story of the red flag rings a bell. I thought it was from a window, which Wikipedia confirms, but we both might be wrong.

Re: Wiki is wrong! Launchbury
Not sure how it is done, but it must be quite easy. My wife’s cousin confessed to me that he wrote his own, which rather took the gloss off my belief in Wiki.

I’m not sure “any means possible “ is correct in heartyball. I remember kicking the ball back and being told in no uncertain terms, that kicking the ball was not on. Intriguing for a game which they described as having no rules.

Re: St Matthew’s Day
Slightly off topic, but my sister's son is getting married tomorrow. She, my brother and I all went to CH, and I joking asked if the date had been chosen on purpose. His name is Matthew. Back on topic, I still have the photos of me receiving a coin from the Lord Mayor, and another, printed in the Ci...

Re: Freaky returns to Sussex (by the sea)
An English friend in the Spanish village where I have a house, has just celebrated his 80th last weekend by inviting friends and family to a meal and music in the village square. That was followed up by a hangover breakfast next day and drinks and music in the swimming pool bar that evening. He clai...

Re: Your nickname
Interesting to see this thread resurrected, and I would imagine that some of the original posters are now offline. I asked people to guess mine, which no one did, but I appear never to have revealed it. I inherited it from Hilliard and was called Joz, and my brother Jozzy. I was small for my age but...

Re: AI the future or the end?
I seem to remember that Roald Dahl wrote a short story about a machine that generated stories, so it is not a new idea.

Re: CH and slavery
I did have one thought about it. A large percentage of the demographic make-up of CH is now BAME, with a great number of pupils of Afro-Caribbean heritage. Perhaps continuing to educate black pupils that would otherwise be unable to afford a public school education is ultimately the best use of som...

Re: Accents at CH Horsham
The maids in our house were Spanish. No mistaking their accent. John - Spanish but which Spanish? I learned Andaluz when I worked in Gibraltar and still understand it. I used to talk by phone with Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile but I cannot understand a word of spoken Castilleno which is anothe...

Re: Brexit
There's no telling what immigration officials will do. On my recent trip to Costa Rica I was stuck behind some Spanish who were obviously travelling in a group. The group leader was in another queue and they spent all their time rushing about to get details of hotels, return flights etc, and got vis...

Re: Brexit
My grandson was born in County Mayo, but my son was told he was not entitled to get an Irish passport as neither of his parents were Irish. I gather he was born in or after 2005 Correct. 2009 I seem to remember Spain is quite restrictive with dual citizenship, with people from most countries having...

Re: Brexit
My maternal grandfather was born in what is now the Republic but getting his birth certificate was pretty simple (from the Irish authorities), and I needed his marriage certificate to my grandmother and, IIRC, his death certificate. My grandmother, who died of TB before WWII, was supposed to have b...
